the trip to romania was totally worth is just to see ana scrape hair off of pig skin before eating it!

What we listened to this year

The NY Times’ David Gallagher linked to this chart earlier on Twitter, which tracks the listening habits of music fans in New York City and compares them to The World. Unsurprisingly, we love Animal Collective way more than anyone else.

Here’s the London version if you are into that sort of thing.  ;)

We were fortunate enough to catch the Nightlosers before I got ridiculously sick:

too awesome, not to post:

It appears that they are playing in NYC on jan 10th ! ! ! !!!!!!!!! !! ! !

Worst blizzard in twenty years sort of thing.  chaos!  Looks like our roadtrip around Transylvania will have to wait until the summer :(

Ana took this photo of me on the walk to the metro.

We were supposed to have a 3 hour layover in Charles de Gaulle but that turned into a 3 hour + 4 hours of sitting on a plane before take off, due to snow (we waited so long, they had to de-ice the plane before we could take off).  We were sitting on an Air France flight behind 3 Romanian guys and this is the moment when i knew that the trip was going to be good:

Romanian guy #3:  Whulmart

Romanian guy #2: No, Walmart

Romanian guy #3:  Whulmart

Romanian guy #2: No, Walmart

Me: wtf are they talking about?? don’t laugh, don’t laugh.

Romanian guy #3:  Whulmart

Romanian guy #2: No, Walmart

Romanian guy #3:  Whulmart

Romanian guy #2: No, Walmart, Walmart Walmart!! They say it Walmart!

Romanian guy #3:  Whulmart

Me: omg…this is straight out of a movie…don’t laugh, don’t laugh, ana might get pissed.

Ana: leans over and whispers “Omg, this is straight out of Borat…”

Me & Ana: shrieking laughter (the delirious and slightly tipsy kind) until everyone on the plane is staring at us.

Hjaltalín’s ‘Traffic Music’ from their debut album Sleepdrunk Seasons.

Leaving for europe in three days, i am not going to iceland but i can’t stop listening to hjaltalín…

I fell in love with a store today, Pip-Squeak Chapeau.

It’s the three month old, concept store of designer Sveta Dresher.

(this pic doesn’t do it justice)

There was something magical about the whitewashed floorboards and videography on the walls playing to Arvo Pärt (who’s name she kindly wrote down for me).  The multi-sensory experience was like walking through clouds and made me want to touch each of the natural fiber, frilly and knitty items – the perfect environment for such tactile things.

I wanted everything!  From every hand-made chiffon skirt and knitted dress, to each carefully chosen journal…this is going to be dangerous…

At least my new found obsession with Estonian composer, Arvo Pärt won’t cost me too much:

On a chirpier note, watch Björk interview Arvo Pärt for the BBC program “Modern Minimalist” (1997)

yay!  it’s friday

Procession of the Ghouls

Friday night, we went to the Procession of the Ghouls (thanks to Aaron).  It was pretty much the most awesome Haloween thing ever.

First of all, it took place at Cathedral of St. John the Divine, which is on 112st and Amsterdam, so I already felt like I was on another planet.  St. John the Divine is apparently the oldest Gothic church in the US and the 4th largest church in the world (it is HUGE!)

They showed the original 1922, Nosferatu with (epic) live organ accompaniment.

Nosferatu is actually in the public domain, you can watch it on youtube or download it for free from the internet archive.

After the film came the Procession of the Ghouls.
