melbourne :: serendipitous
so, moving to a place you have never been is annoying! i have been aimlessly looking at apartments online for the last couple weeks..but it’s pretty pointless since i don’ know where i want to live in melbourne (oops, i mean, melbun)…of course, people have told me some spots…but nothing really substantial. so, today i decide that enough is enough, that i have done enough pre-screening to feel proactive and that i am not going to bore myself anymore with this fruitless task. i have much better things to do at my parents house in new orleans, like watch tv.
it took weeks, but traveling actually weened me off of blog reading and pointless internet surfing…in an effort to hang on to this oldschool way of life, i go to a local bookstore and buy some magazines.
Traveling has made me mildly start to second guess the melbourne thing (in a …WHY didn’t i pick one of the europe schools way?!!?)
i start flipping through a juxtapose, trying to appreciate relaxing with a magazine but really just kinda feel awkward because i used to work in the coffee shop that i am sitting in…when low and behold:
“Just under four million people inhabit metropolitan Melbourne, Australia. That’s a quarter of Beijing’s population and less than half the population of New York City. Despite its size, Melbourne has the reputation for nurturing one of the most dynamic and tight-knit creative cultures in the world.
There’s a myth that trends in the arts (as with almost everything) begin in Europe and America and then sweep across the world like some sort of global heatwave. Melbourne, however is far enough away that creative influences from abroad provide only soft backing harmonies rather than the vocals.
In Melbourne, fecundity begets creativity.
oh, yeah! that’s why i picked melbourne…cause it’s effing RAD!
Oh, and the rest of the article is a breakdown of different neighborhoods in melbourne with descriptions of why they are cool! guess i can go back to looking for apts
